Organized Vehicle Theft Rings in Dhaka: A Growing Concern
In Dhaka, a sophisticated vehicle theft network, commonly known as ‘Chakri Chor’ (theft ring), is becoming a significant concern for law enforcement. The modus operandi involves strategically breaking the locks of parked vehicles using a specialized key called ‘Master Key’ near parking lots and roadsides, leading to an alarming increase in car theft incidents.
Sources reveal that around 20-25 vehicles are stolen monthly from the capital, with at least 20 active rings operating in different districts. These rings specialize in the theft of motorcycles, CNJs (compact non-jeeps), private cars, and pickup trucks, each with its dedicated group of criminals.
Despite occasional arrests and recovery efforts by Thana Police and Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police, the organized theft operations persist. Authorities emphasize the need for increased vigilance among drivers and the mandatory use of digital devices such as ‘Trackers’ and digital number plates to deter and track stolen vehicles effectively.
The organized vehicle theft rings are reported to be active in various areas, including Mirpur, Badda, Matikata, Mohammadpur, Shyamoli, Shahbag, Mitford, Dhaka University, and Uttara Kamrangicharkendrik, with groups like Sagar Group, Ruhul Group, Tipu Group, Roni Group, Kana Shahid Group, Babul Group, Ali Group, Mujibar Group, Salim Group, Nozrul Group, Ilyas Group, Shamim Group, Jamal, and Chhoto Jamal Group among the prominent ones.
The stolen vehicles are initially kept in specific locations in Narayanganj and Gazipur, later being sold in rural areas and towns. The police express the importance of strict law enforcement against vehicle theft and the need for drivers to remain vigilant. Additionally, they stress the installation of digital trackers and number plates on vehicles.
According to Deputy Commissioner Nishat Rahman Mithun of the Extra Commissioner’s team combating vehicle theft, several active rings have been identified. However, even after the arrest of some members and recovery of stolen vehicles, the remaining rings continue their illicit activities.
The modus operandi involves targeting CNJs for theft, using the ‘Master Key’ for quick and discreet operations. In the case of motorcycles, private cars, and pickups, a specialized key is used for swift theft within 1-5 minutes.
Law enforcement officials from the Detective Branch emphasize the importance of digital number plates and trackers, stating that their presence significantly increases the chances of recovering stolen vehicles and apprehending thieves. They also encourage citizens to report any suspicious activities to the emergency hotline 999.
Despite successful operations against several groups in the past year, including the arrest of seven members in Mirpur, Demra, and Shyampur, the issue persists, highlighting the need for continuous efforts in curbing organized vehicle theft in Dhaka.
